Trade Strategy

Responding to the Department for Business and Trade’s launch of a new UK Trade Strategy, Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:

“The Labour government is right to move to shore up the UK’s trade defences to protect critical sectors like steel from the threat of dumped imports and global overcapacity. In uncertain times, and in the midst of a volatile global market outlook for steel, we welcome the assertive action the government has taken. This is exactly the sort of proactive approach our members, and the steel sector more widely, have been calling for over the course of many years, and which was sorely missing under the previous Conservative government.

“It’s now imperative that we have a robust UK trade defence system in place ahead of the expiry of current steel safeguards next year so that a cliff-edge scenario can be avoided. We will continue to work closely with the government on trade policy – it’s vital we get this right and give our steel industry the secure future it needs and that the workforce deserves.”
