End of an era: Newcastle AA rep Deb Tucker retires

The 30th of April 2025 marked the last day working at the AA, for our Senior Rep Deb Tucker (pictured centre). Her colleague, our AA rep Paul Thomas, pays tribute below.

Deb based in Newcastle has worked for the AA for over 31 years and has been an active union representative since the 1st of April 2005. What an incredible 20-year journey driving forward our members’ views and making sure Newcastle is firmly on the map.

Deb, who started her career in telesales, became a full-time union representative over 18 years ago, starting with the AAIDU, which moved into the Independent Democratic Union and later Community. She’s been a formidable fighting force of knowledge and empathy.

Deb has worked with many of us over the years, and is much loved. She will certainly be missed. Her caring approach to gain the best outcomes for her members gained her much affection; whilst her uplifting personality, drive and charismatic charm has always been like having your big sister in the room.

We would like to thank Deb, for everything, every call and every case, expertly delivered like a military operation.

There are so many reasons why we will all miss Deb, but I think we will all agree that she is infectious. 5 minutes with Deb and you are guaranteed to smile, sometimes raucously roll with laughter.

AA rep Deb Wood said “Deb Tucker has been an inspirational driving force for the rights of our members, she has a heart of gold and although its goodbye for now, Deb remains firmly part of family”.

What’s next for Deb? Well, it sounds like retirement is really going to suit her, five holidays already booked, including a cruise, she loves spending time with her friends and family, husband Billy and daughter Laura, and the time is right.

But we will all miss you Deb!
