Report launch: The race to the top for European green steel

This week Community launched a new report in partnership with Common Wealth. The report highlights just how far the UK is trailing behind the rest of Europe when it comes to the race for green steel. You can read it here.

On the launch of the report, Alasdair McDiarmid, Operations Director at Community, said:

“The leading economies in the world, the US, China, Japan and Germany, have all built their success on the foundation of a strong steel industry. As Britain charts a new course we must renew and strengthen our steel industry, and that means making major investments in low-carbon steelmaking.

The fact is no steelmaker can decarbonise without a strategic partnership between government and industry, but this research shows Britain isn’t even at the races. The situation is urgent as our EU competitors are years ahead of us, because their governments recognise they need a sustainable domestic steel industry and so are supporting steelmakers to decarbonise.

This research from Community, Common Wealth and Bellona, demonstrates that green steelmaking technologies are being adopted across Europe, and they can be deployed in Britain if there is the political will to make it happen. Brexit was supposed to make it easier for government to back British jobs and industry, and supporting the green steel transition is a major test of our next Prime Minister’s commitment to levelling-up.”
