Reacting to the government’s response to the consultation on the Employment Rights Bill, Community Assistant General Secretary Alasdair McDiarmid said:
“We welcome the progress being made on the Employment Rights Bill, which will have a transformative impact for workers across the UK. The written statement published by the Business Secretary today confirms that the government is committed to working with trade union partners to strengthen the legislation for the benefit our members, the wider workforce and the country as a whole.
“We support the government’s intention to amend the Bill to improve trade union recognition and access in workplaces, and to remove some of the arcane bureaucratic hurdles which hinder industrial processes. We also welcome the government’s commitment to improving protections for agency workers, and to extending eligibility to Statutory Sick Pay to those earning below the Lower Earnings Limit from the first day of sickness absence.
“There is still work to be done, and we will of course be contributing to the further consultation the Secretary of State referenced in his statement today. We look forward to seeing the Employment Rights Bill in the statute book in the near future, and we will continue to work closely with this ambitious Labour government which has shown it is firmly on the side of working people.”
