Spending Review

Responding to today’s Spending Review, Community General Secretary Roy Rickhuss CBE said:

“Today’s Spending Review demonstrates that the Labour government is serious about initiating a programme of national renewal and driving growth right across the nations and regions of the UK.

“The landmark investment in defence, infrastructure and much-needed housing laid out by the Chancellor today will bring long-term benefits for the country. This will drive down the cost of living, while opening up huge opportunities for our steel industry and the wider manufacturing sector.

“Labour’s commitment to use more British steel in construction is extremely welcome, including the modular reactors being built by Rolls-Royce, and further investing £426m at Sheffield Forgemasters. This commitment and investment into our steel industry will deliver high quality jobs across the UK. And it further demonstrates that Labour is the party that backs our steel industry.

“The confirmation of further investment in education delivering £2.3bn for our crumbling schools and a £7bn investment into our prisons will also be welcomed by our members in the education, justice and custodial sectors. Today’s announcements show Labour’s commitment to our children’s education and keeping our nation’s streets safe.

“Whilst we will await further details over the days and weeks ahead, there is no doubt that this Spending Review shows an ambitious Labour government committed to delivering change and a new era of opportunity for working people across the United Kingdom.”
